Intern Blog
Dan Smith, Sport Management, Brock University
Experience: It's that one word that you are always hearing students talk about when they discuss the advancement of their careers. Typically, with a program like Sport Management, students discuss interning with massive sport organizations, such as the Toronto Maple Leafs or the CFL. These are the organizations that you see everyday, & thus one can understand why people are so eager to intern with these established companies.
However, many students fail to consider and discuss the fact that perhaps the best internship opportunities lie with those organizations that can actually use the manpower. After interning at the Niagara Sport Commission for the past month, I can tell you there are not many better opportunities to gain experience than to join up with a sport organization that is still in it's relative infancy.
It took about 2 hours into my first day to realize that I would be handling some significant tasks. From conducting Economic Impact Assessments for events in the area, to securing sponsorship money for the OBA U-17 tournament, there are many important tasks that need to be completed on a day-to-day basis. After only a month, the sense of responsibility that I have felt within the NSC has been unmatched to anything I have ever felt in any other workplace.
Not to be understated is the leadership & guidance of Scott McRoberts, NSC Director. Anybody who has had the pleasure of meeting Scott may as well skip ahead a few lines, because you already know what is about to be said. But, for those who are unaware, you will not find a boss quite like him. He is always willing to trust and instill responsibility in those who work for him & he's the kind of boss the actually makes you want to get work done, & done well. He is the kind of guy that does not crack under pressure & thus you never feel a sense of panic when he's around.
To say that I would recommend this opportunity to any Sport Management student is an understatement. I would almost go as far as to say it is a mistake to avoid such an opportunity, especially because it is so close to Brock & already has so many connections in the community. Sometimes I wonder: what took me so long to get involved?

| The Niagara Sport Commission hosts a second successful Ontario Basketball Championships |
The Niagara Sport Commission would like to thank everyone involved in hosting this past weekend's Under 17 Ontario Basketball Championships. This Ontario Cup event saw 63 teams, 900 athletes, 1,000 spectators visit the Niagara Region from May 27-29.
The Niagara Sport Commission is extremely thankful to its partners: Brock University, Niagara College, and the Niagara Falls Red Raiders. Without the hard work from everyone within these organizations, this event would not have been a success. The Commission would also like to thank the over 65 volunteers, and all of the game officials for their commitment to this event, as all of Ontario Basketball's participants and spectators were very appreciative of their efforts.
Thank you to all the local businesses and hotels for their support including Cogeco, who came out to film the championship game for Division Four. The Commission is proud to have hosted this event, as well as the Under 11 Ontario Cup back in April. Both events saw over 1,200 room nights utilized within the Region and it is estimated that these events generated over $1.1 million dollars in economic impact on our community. The Niagara Sport Commission is looking forward to hosting OBA events next year!
For further details on the winners of each division, please log on to www.basketball.on.ca. For further information about the Commission, please e-mail us at info@niagarasportcommission.com, or visit us at www.niagarasportcommission.com.
